What is XSS Filtering?

XSS filtering works by scrutinizing data entering a web application for malicious scripts, ensuring only safe content is processed and rendered.

Types of XSS Attacks:

  • Stored XSS: Stored XSS involves storing a malicious script in the database of a target website. When users visit the affected page, the script executes in their browser.
  • DOM-based XSS: This type occurs directly in the user’s browser without needing to send the malicious script to the server. The manipulation happens in the Document Object Model (DOM) of the webpage.

To combat these threats, XSS filtering strategies are employed:

  • Sanitization: Removing or encoding dangerous characters from user inputs.
  • Validation: Ensuring that inputs match a specific criterion before they're processed.
  • Escaping: Transforming certain characters in inputs so that they are treated as data rather than executable code.

Web browsers also contribute to XSS prevention through built-in XSS filters. These filters automatically detect attempts to launch XSS attacks in web pages and block the malicious scripts. However, relying solely on browser XSS filters is not advisable due to the diversity of attack vectors and the potential for new vulnerabilities.
